Fishers who recently had a fruitless outing on the lake could take a lesson from 7-year-old Hajile Danzy, who had an incredible catch on her first try.

Danzy nabbed a 14-inch bowfin, an ancient species of fish native to Ohio, when godfather Tip Pullin took her to Sippo Lake for her first angling lesson, News Net 5 reported.

Pulled from the lake near Canton, Ohio, was this nasty-looking creature with teeth and a snakelike head, which has survived for more than 150 million years, according to Bowfin Anglers Group.

"I had to take the reel. It was big, like a catfish fighting. But it wasn't a catfish, we weren't sure what it was. Nobody knew for sure around the lake, not even the ranger," Pullin told News Net 5.

Matt Wolfe, a fisheries biologist with the Ohio Department of Wildlife, said in the report that the bowfin can be confused with the similar-looking snakehead, but the bowfin isn't an invasive species. A snakehead, on the other hand, should be discarded if caught, as they are known to overpopulate ponds and consume all other species.
