Tornadoes, Thunderstorms, Hail Hit the Midwest and South (PHOTOS)

A multi-day severe weather event stretched into Thursday, bringing hail, heavy rains and tornadoes from the Plains into the Midwest. Tornado watches and severe thunderstorm watches stretched from Texas into Pennsylvania and West Virginia, and meteorologists warned a dangerous evening was ahead.

Thursday night, a large, long-track tornado hit northern Illinois and crossed I-39 before causing massive damage in several towns, including Rochelle and Fairdale.

A tornado-warned cell reportedly left damage to buildings and power lines in Clinton, Iowa, outside of Davenport on Thursday. Police told The Weather Channel they were fieldings tons of calls.

Earlier in the week, grapefruit-size hail was reported around Sullivan, Missouri, around 2:30 p.m. CDT Wednesday afternoon. There were reports of smashed car windshields and damage to homes. Elsewhere in the state, wind and hail damage was also reported.

Hail up to 2 inches in diameter fell near Atchison, Kansas, before sunrise Wednesday. Hail of a similar size fell just outside of Jefferson City, Missouri, during the lunch hour, and numerous hail reports were relayed as far east as Indiana and Kentucky on Wednesday.
