Severe Weather Could Pack Tornadoes As Serious Flood Threat Develops From Texas To Lower-Mississippi Valley

Thunderstorms could pack intense rainfall, gusty winds, and hail eastward from southeast Texas and Louisiana to southern Mississippi through Wednesday.

-What We Are Tracking Now: Severe thunderstorms and flooding rainfall are ongoing right now across parts of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Flooding, large hail, damaging winds and a few isolated tornadoes are possible in these states into the overnight hours.

Flash Flood Threat Area Of Concern: A broad area along the northern Gulf Coast will see localized flooding through Wednesday, including New Orleans and Houston.

In particular, southeastern Louisiana could see bands of rain stall out and move over the same areas repeatedly with intense rainfall rates of more than inch per hour. Rainfall totals of up to half-foot (locally higher) are possible, which could inundate roadways and flood urban and poor drainage locations.

If you encounter a flooded road, do not try to drive through the floodwaters.

It may be tough to tell how deep the water is when you approach a flooded section of roadway, especially at night, so never try to proceed and instead "Turn around. Don't drown," as the National Weather Service says. Entering a flooded area can allow water to enter your vehicle in a manner of minutes, even seconds.
