An outbreak of severe thunderstorms with tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds hit parts of the mid-Mississippi Valley and South on Apr. 3, 2014.

This was, coincidentally, the 40th anniversary of one of the nation's worst tornado outbreaks, the 1974 Superoutbreak.

In addition, flooding was widespread from Missouri to the Ohio Valley. April 3 was the fourth wettest day on record in Evansville, Ind. (4.96 inches). Numerous vehicles were abandoned in high water, and water was seen shooting out of sewers just after midnight.

Numerous high water rescues were required in the city of New Albany, Ind. A mudslide blocked one lane of Interstate 64, there. Homes were flooded on the southeast side of Harrisburg, Ill.
