Winter Storm Garnett, Plus Two More Storms, Bringing Eastern Snow Ice Through Upcoming Week

A​ parade of winter storms will continue into the upcoming week across parts of the Northeast, Midwest and Plains, with the second of those expected to produce snow and ice this weekend.

T​he first of these, named Winter Storm Freya by The Weather Channel, left a swath of ice across parts of the Appalachians, mid-Atlantic, Midwest and Plains, but relatively light snow accumulations Wednesday into Thursday.

W​eekend storm is next: The second of these, named Winter Storm Garnett by The Weather Channel, is wrapping up its snowy impacts on the Northeast and Great Lakes Sunday morning.

T​he National Weather Service has issued various winter storm alerts shown in the map below from the eastern Great Lakes to the Northeast.

I​n particular, winter storm warnings remain for southern New England and eastern New York. Heavy snow and some ice will lead to dangerous driving conditions through Sunday morning.

G​arnett has already spread heavy snow across the country's Northern Tier. Parts of Montana picked up over a foot of snow on Friday and 5-12 inches of snow fell from the Dakotas to northern Wisconsin on Saturday. Three to six inches has fallen in Minneapolis.

A​s of Sunday morning, some areas in the Northeast have received almost a foot of snow. Nine inches has fallen in Lake Desolation, New York, and Cumberland, Maine, has received eight inches of snow.

T​imeline

-​ Sunday: Roads, particularly around the Mason-Dixon line, could be dangerous early Sunday from leftover snow and ice. Snow and wind may persist early in New England before ending late Sunday morning. If you're heading to a Super Bowl party, weather should be clear by Sunday evening in most areas.

T​wo more rounds of snow and ice are expected in the upcoming week:

1. Later Monday into early Wednesday from the Plains to the Ohio Valley, mid-Atlantic and Northeast. This has the potential to bring heavy snow to parts of the Interstate 95 Northeast corridor Tuesday, including New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.

2​. Late Tuesday through Thursday from the Front Range of the Rockies to the mid-Mississippi Valley, Ohio Valley and Northeast.
