Rain, Snow, Ice Begins Today Across South

January 24, 2026

Winter Storm Fern will bring “catastrophic” ice accumulations to the Deep South this weekend. Precipitation will begin as rain on Friday across much of Texas. As the cold arctic air rushes in, rain will change to a mix of freezing rain and sleet Friday night into Saturday before ending Sunday morning. Minor ice accumulations will be possible in Houston, Austin and San Antonio with higher and potentially extreme ice accretions likely in Dallas, Fort Worth, Texarkana, Shreveport, Greenville and Tupelo. This will be a long-duration event, so tree damage and power outages are likely and travel will become difficult to impossible. Plan on staying home this weekend and if you must travel, please carry a winter emergency kit in your car just in case. Watch the video to see the latest snow and ice forecasts.
