Where In The World Is --- The Sleeping Giant?

For centuries, travelers crossing a grand lake have reported seeing the same mysterious sight on the horizon ... a massive figure lying on its back, appearing to rest peacefully along the shoreline.

From a distance, the silhouette is unmistakable: a giant human form stretched out against the sky, complete with a clearly defined head, chest and folded arms. Early voyageurs called it "The Enormous Giant," while locals knew it by an even older name. Their stories described a spirit being who was turned to stone while protecting his people's sacred silver mine from outsiders. According to the story, he lies there still, an eternal guardian watching over the great lake's waters.

But this isn't just folklore. The formation is actually one of the most impressive examples of geological layering you'll find anywhere in the continent where it sits. What appears to be a resting giant from across the water is, in reality, a mesa-like plateau formed by diabase sills, or ancient magma intrusions that cooled between existing rock layers over a billion years ago.

The Sleeping Giant rises nearly 1,200 feet above Lake Superior and stretches for almost 15 miles along Ontario's Sibley Peninsula, about 25 miles east of Thunder Bay, Ontario. The formation anchors Sleeping Giant Provincial Park, where hiking trails lead to the "giant's" chest and offer spectacular views across Lake Superior, although the most famous perspective comes from viewing it across the water from Thunder Bay itself.
