Overwater bungalows have become the ultimate bucket-list getaways, but while the Frying Pan Tower, which is perched 85 feet above the Atlantic Ocean, doesn't have an infinity pool or luxury amenities of the resorts in the Maldives, it offers all the ocean views and solitude one would need. Plus, it has the distinction of being named one of the scariest hotels in the world.

A unique, remote bed and breakfast located 34 miles off the coast of North Carolina and only accessible by helicopter or boat, the Frying Pan Tower is a restored Coast Guard Light Station set right in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean's "hurricane alley."

Built in 1964, the structure was a modified Texas drilling platform, called a "Texas Tower," and was designed to provide housing and support for the light, and to warn ships of the shallow waters, according to its website. It was abandoned in the 1970s and the tower was purchased by Richard Neal, a software engineer when it was auctioned by the US government in 2010.

The rooms at the hotel, which is being restored with the help of volunteers and donations, are rustic and basic to keep with the original look and feel of the 1964-built station. The Frying Pan Tower has five twin beds (official US Coast Guard twin size) and three queen beds in eight ocean-facing rooms. A stay in the hotel costs $498 per person for three days and two nights. 

Guests at the Frying Pan Tower, which has become an attraction, are requested to cook and clean up all meals. However, on request, a chef can be available to cook meals. Need more entertainment than the spectacular sunrise and sunset views from the helipad? The tower also features a pool table, telescope, internet access and digital TV on a 8’ projector.
