For many, simply witnessing the Northern Lights can be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Photographer Hallgrimur P. Helgason has had that pleasure several times, but perhaps no other time has measured up to this recent photo shoot.

"It’s really a thrill shooting the aurora, especially when they are so playful like they were that night," Helgason told Caters News Agency.

After photographing for about an hour, Helgason noticed the aurora borealis taking the shape of a giant phoenix.

"I have to admit that I always get an adrenalin kick when the lights burst out like that — that particular shot was the top one of the night," he added.
