World’s Largest Iceberg Runs Aground

A trillion-ton slab of ice broke off Antarctica’s Filchner Ice Shelf in 1986. Officially catalogued as iceberg A23a, it was stuck at sea for decades. Then it started moving again. Satellite tracking showed it nearing the island of South Georgia in January. And then it stopped. Scientists say such large icebergs are rare. This one, the size of Rhode Island, could stay stuck again until it starts to break apart.
