The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flash Flood Warning for... The island of Hawaii in Hawaii County Until 345 PM HST. At 101 PM HST, radar indicated an area of very heavy rain over far eastern Big Island between Laupahoehoe and Mountain View. Rain was falling at a rate of 2 to 4 inches per hour. Hawaii County Civil Defense reported road flooding along Bayfront Highway. Additional areas of heavy rain could develop elsewhere in the warned area over the next few hours. HAZARD...Flash flooding caused by heavy rain. SOURCE...Emergency management. IMPACT...Flooding in drainages, streams, rivers, roads, properties, and other low-lying areas. Public road closures possible in some areas. Landslides are possible in steep terrain. Some locations that will experience flash flooding include... Hilo, Hawaiian Paradise Park, Honokaa, Volcano, Glenwood, Mountain View, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hawaiian Acres, Keaau, Wood Valley, Pohakuloa Camp, Papaikou, Pepeekeo, Pahala, Honomu, Pahoa and Hakalau. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Stay away from streams, rivers, drainage ditches, and culverts, even if they are currently dry. WHAT...Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible. WHERE...The Big Island. WHEN...Through this afternoon. IMPACTS...Flood prone roads and other low lying areas may be closed due to elevated runoff and overflowing streams due to excessive rain over saturated ground. Urban areas may receive more significant flooding and property damage due to rapid runoff. ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - Unstable tropical moisture left from the departing kona low and troughing aloft will bring possible heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms through the afternoon hours. A large band of thunderstorms continues to approach the Big Island from the west-southwest direction, which may produce another round of heavy rainfall later today. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.
